人们口中常说的播放系统主要包括三大部分组成，分别为音视频播放机、AV放大器、音箱系统。三者缺少了任何一部也不能称为家庭影院的播放系统。

在市面上我们可以找到很多之如LD、录像机、VCD机或DVD机等。但作为现代家庭影院中使用的播放系统，有一部分LD、录像机、VCD机也算不上是其中的一部分。好像VCD机，其使用的VCD碟片为MPEG-1格式，图像被严重压缩，画质失真非常之大，根本不能说是影院效果。所以使用VCD机不能算是家庭影院播放系统的中的音视频播放机。DVD机是现在最普及也是组成家庭影院播放系统的基本配置。而不支持多声道播放的也不能算是组成家庭影院播放系统的音视频播放机。

家庭影院播放系统的最后一个组成部分为音箱系统。也是播放系统中所占价格比例最大的一部分。在20000元以下，音视频播放机/AV功放/音箱系统可以按1/1/2的价格下去选购，而因为AV功放在系统中起着承前启后的重要作用，在某些时候我们可以按1/1.5/2的价格选购。最基本的音箱系统为5.1声道，一对主音箱左右声道、一对环绕音箱左右声道、和 一只中置音箱组成，另有发烧级家庭影院7.1声道，多增加一对侧环绕音箱，效果更佳。
